Comfort Quilt Committee

Making quilts for those in our community who might benefit from a little extra caring is a major part of our quilt guild mission.  The duties of the comfort quilt committee are to

  • Coordinate community education and service projects.
  • Present the general membership with a selection of proposals for ongoing community service.

The comfort quilt committee currently has 8 members and we would welcome additional volunteers.  This committee works together to coordinate the donations of fabric we receive into color-coordinated packets that are distributed to the general membership for individual charity quilt projects.  We organize work parties called Sew-In's, so that members can come together, share our work, learn new techniques and of course, socialize.

Making comfort quilts can provide a venue for learning techniques and working with color schemes that one might not otherwise choose for their own home projects.

Our current recipient service organizations are:

KidsDream of Snohomish County, which serves the needs of foster children.  KidsDream staff distribute our quilts through their KidsCloset program, where foster parents can comb clothes racks 4 times a year to outfit children in seasonal clothing.   With a 70% high school dropout rate among foster children, high school graduation is a big event for the 30% who do graduate.  KidsDream staff puts together a hope chest for each graduating senior, and ideally, each will receive a twin-sized quilt to start them on their way toward independent living.  From nap-size baby quilts to twin-sized high school Graduate quilts, our quilts are needed and loved.  In 2009, MLQ members donated 10 grad quilts and 8 lap quilts.   In 2010, 15 grad quilts and 3 lap quilts were donated.  KidsDream staff has impressed us with their big hearts and their ability to match our quilts to kids in need of extra TLC.

Senior Services of Snohomish County, which serves disabled and low-income seniors.  This is our first year donating to Senior Services.  We are impressed with tMLQ members Alice and Carol with Senior Services staffheir low 11% overhead costs and the multiple programs they bring to seniors, including meals on wheels for homebound seniors,  nutritious meals served through senior centers, management of low-income housing units and Dial-a-Ride community transportation for the disabled.  We donated 23 quilts in 2009, and the Senior Services staff impresses us with their intent to match quilts to individuals in need of extra TLC.  Wheelchair quilts and napsize quilts are needed.

If anyone knows of other organizations they feel would be worthy recipients of our quilts please contact call Carol Peters.

Quilt size guidelines are available through the following link for Instructive Articles.  This will help you determine the size needed to make a wheelchair lap quilt, a nap quilt, or a kid's quilt.
